On 23 March, the Commission on Political Rights of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation discussed the implementation of legislation by the law enforcement when initiating criminal and administrative cases, searches, detentions and arrests in February-March 2022. Nikolai Svanidze, Commission Chairman, historian and journalist, invited Lev Shlosberg, Chairman of the Pskov Yabloko, Lev Ponomaryov, human rights defender, and Denis Shadrin, lawyer of the human rights OVD-Info NGO, to the meeting.
The meeting was attended by following members of the Human Rights Council: Igor Kalyapin, Chairman of the Committee against Torture, Vladimir Ryakhovsky, Managing Partner of the Slavic Legal Centre Law Office, Natalia Yevdokimova, Executive Secretary of the Human Rights Council of St. Petersburg, Alexander Verkhovsky, Director of the Sova Information and Analytical Centre, and Alexander Tochenov, President of the Centre for Applied Research and Programmes and Executive Secretary of the Human Rights Council. The discussion took place via a zoom conference.
“I told my colleagues in detail about the events that took place in Pskov on 5 March and 18 March: “inspections” at the offices of Pskov Yabloko and Pskov Gubernia newspaper, as well as searches at the homes of our team’s activists, independent journalists, and again at our office; about personal, political and legal consequences of these searches, about the ”legitimization of searches” that the Pskov City Court has been approving on a daily basis since 20 March, and the work of our lawyer.
Based on the results of a detailed discussion, it was decided to prepare a detailed report on all the events and the identified violations. The Human Rights Council, within the framework of its now very limited, but real possibilities, continues to support all those whose rights have been violated by the actions of the authorities and law enforcement agencies. Thanks to everyone who calmly and professionally protects people. This is very important not only legally, but also psychologically.
The Pskov cases will no longer remain within the boundaries of the regional agenda,” Lev Shlosberg commented on the results of the meeting.
