Kirsan Ilyumzhinov as FIDE President is a disgrace not only for Russia but for the whole world
Statement by YABLOKO Bureau, 16.05.2014
Regular elections of FIDE President have to take place in Tromso, Norway, in August 2014. At present this post has been taken by Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, ex-President of the Republic of Kalmykia, Russia, and he will compete for another term of FIDE presidency.
The YABLOKO party has been repeatedly stating that Kirsan Ilyumzhinov’s regime in the Republic of Kalmykia representing a disgusting merger of authoritarian rule, corruption and crime has been one of the ugliest phenomena is Russia’s political life for the past two decades.
In 1998 fight against this regime cost life to Larissa Yudina, Chair of the YABLOKO regional branch in Kalmykia, and Kirsan Ilyumzhinov’s assistant was convicted for her murder. In our opinion, political responsibility for this murder lies completely on Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
The YABLOKO party considers re-election of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov on the post of FIDE President unacceptable and urges delegates of the FIDE Congress not to support this candidacy.
Sergei Mitrokhin,
YABLOKO Chair
