Four MPs voted for the bill, thirteen voted against, and six abstained. Earlier, the Governor of the Pskov region, Mikhail Vedernikov, wrote in his opinion on the Yabloko bill on criminal liability for propaganda of nuclear war that “a call to commit legal actions cannot be a crime,” therefore, the initiative could not be supported.
Before the vote, Yabloko deputy Artur Gaiduk addressed his parliamentary colleagues: “Today, journalists, bloggers, and TV anchors very often allow themselves to actively and publicly call for nuclear war and the use of nuclear weapons. We believe that these are absolutely unacceptable things.”
It should be noted that the bill proposes to supplement the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation with Article 354.2, which is actually a logical supplement of the current Article 354, which prohibits public calls to unleash a war of aggression, but is important for adoption, taking into account the special status of nuclear weapons and the catastrophic consequences of their possible use.
Earlier, regional MPs from Yabloko submitted similar bills to the legislative assemblies of St. Petersburg and Karelia. Parliamentarians in Karelia did not support the initiative, and in St. Petersburg the Legislative Assembly refused to include it in the agenda of the session at all.
