Boris Vishnevsky submitted documents for registration as candidate in the St. Petersburg gubernatorial election
Press Release, 6.06.2019
Boris Vishnevsky, head of the Yabloko faction in the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, submitted to the St.Petersburg Electoral Commission documents required for his registration as candidate in the St. Petersburg gubernatorial election.
On 5 June, the 18th Conference of St. Petersburg Yabloko, nominated Boris Vishnevsky as a candidate for Governor of St. Petersburg, despite the attempt by pro-government provocateurs to disrupt the conference. The decision on nominating Vishnevsky was taken unanimously, 17 delegates voted for his candidacy. On 4 June, the candidacy of Boris Vishnevsky, who won the St. Petersburg Yabloko primaries, was approved by the Executive Committee of the Yabloko Bureau.
“I am grateful to my fellow party members for their trust. The most difficult stage of the election campaign – registration – is ahead. The rules are written in such a way that it is easier to win elections than to register for them,” Boris Vishnevsky said.
It should be noted that Boris Vishnevsky said he intended to participate in the election for the post of St.Petersburg Governor in June 2018. However, despite the fact that Yabloko enjoys the support of hundreds of thousands of city residents – the party received more than 12 per cent of the vote in the elections of 2016 – in order to be registered, Boris Vishnevsky should collect at least 160 signatures of municipal deputies from different municipalities in favour of his nomination. However, the ruling United Russia holds the absolute majority of deputy mandates in the municipalities of St. Petersburg after the scandalous fraudulent municipal elections of 2014, and municipal deputies from United Russia do not sign for candidates from opposition.
On 3 June, the Bureau of the St.Petersburg regional branch of the party released a statement that Yabloko voters should be guaranteed the right to their own candidate for governor. The statements runs that government is rapidly forming a list of convenient candidates for the post of Governor, panicking when a candidate, like a candidate from Yabloko, who is determined to fight with the provisional Governor Alexander Beglov appointed by the Kremlin will be able to present a real alternative to the present Governor based on contempt of the citizens, their opinions and their interests.
Boris Vishnevsky has submitted the first version of his programme for the gubernatorial election to the public. He plans to supplement the programme in accordance with proposals and comments of city residents. Also Vishnevsky has published his report on his parliamentary work in the Legislative Assembly from 2016 to 2018.
