Alexei Yablokov to participate in the All-Russian campaign “Freedom to the Defenders of the Arctic”

On Sunday, October 27, at 14:00, Alexei Yablokov, Chairman of YABLOKO’s Green Russia faction and Adviser in the Russian Academy of Sciences, will participate in the national campaign “Freedom to the Defenders of the Arctic” in Pushkin Square in Moscow.
This will an All-Russian action in support of the crew of the Greenpeace Arctic Sunrise ship arrested on October 25-27. Activists of the Green Russia faction of the YABLOKO party will conduct protest actions in different Russia’s cities: St. Petersburg, Arkhangelsk, Petrozavodsk, Krasnoyarsk, Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Ulan-Ude, Blagoveshchensk, Volgograd, Kostroma, Nizhny Novgorod, Vladikavkaz and Sosnovy Bor.
YABLOKO considers the detention of the Arctic Sunrise ship of the international environmental organisation Greenpeace be criminal adventurism on behalf of the Russian authorities. The party’s position is expressed in the party statement.
Greenpeace activists tried to climb Gazprom’s oil platform Prirazlomnaya in the Pechora Sea campaigning against extraction of oil in the Arctic. They were detained, taken to Murmansk and then arrested on charges of piracy. On October 23, the “piracy” case was replaced with “hooliganism”. Environmentalists are facing up to seven years of imprisonment.
