In the heart of Moscow, the distinctive district of Ivanovskaya Gorka has survived to the present day, one of the few historically intact areas that preserve the spirit and character of old Moscow: its historic topography, medieval street network, and architectural monuments spanning the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries.
The cultural centrepiece of Ivanovskaya Gorka is the estate of Pyotr Ivanovich Jurgenson, with its ancient garden and music printing house — a landmark in the development of Russian and world music, and an important element of the district’s urban ensemble.
For many years, residents of Ivanovskaya Gorka and engaged members of the wider community have held weekly protest actions here, known as the “Khokhlovka Vigils” (after the nearby Khokhlovskiy Pereulok), calling for the restoration of the Jurgenson Garden, on the site of which a business centre is currently under construction.
The construction is being carried out by OOO Delovoy Mir Management Company, whose founders are registered in the British Virgin Islands. Moscow Yabloko notes that the construction of a business centre on the site of the Jurgenson Garden is destroying the district’s urban fabric and erasing its historical memory.
We demand that construction of the business centre be halted and that the picturesque panorama of Ivanovskaya Gorka be restored to the city!
