Can citizens safely and effectively resist the oligarchic system while protecting their rights? Sergei Mitrokhin’s answer is “yes, they can”.
Sergei Mitrokhin, the second Chairman of Yabloko, a deputy of the State Duma of three convocations and a deputy of the Moscow City Duma of two convocations, spoke at a meeting in Yabloko about how the merger of business and government affects the rights of Muscovites and what citizens need to do to resist this system.
The meeting with Sergei Mitrokhin in Yabloko gave civil activists the opportunity to talk about trouble spots in their districts of Moscow, as well as share successful cases of fighting unlawful construction and destructive “improvements” in Moscow.
The participants disputed which methods of fighting for their rights were the most efficient. At the same time, all the participants of the meeting agreed with Sergei Mitrokhin on the inadmissibility to remain inactive. Sergei Mitrokhin is well known in Moscow also for his visiting problem areas of the city almost every day – he communicates with citizens, opposes unlawful construction, and consults initiative groups before their communication with officials. Muscovites who gathered at Yabloko thanked Mitrokhin for his attention to their problems and willingness to come to the rescue in any situation.
Municipal deputy from Yabloko Anatoly Zakharov spoke about his experience of working in the Bogorodskoye district. According to the politician, not all initiatives of the authorities that are harmful to people can be stopped. Nevertheless, thousands of citizens who are ready to leave signatures under petitions or come to the head of the district council can influence the developments in their district.
Deputy Chairperson of the Moscow Yabloko party and moderator of the meeting, Irina Kopkina, summed up the meeting with Sergei Mitrokhin noting that the party’s main political demand – the immediate conclusion of a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine – is important so that so stop killing of people and for the future and development of Russia and Moscow.
