The action in Vladivostok

In May, Yabloko activists held traditional actions in support of Russian political prisoners. Party members and civil activists exchanged news, recited poems written by political prisoners and read out letters received from political prisoners. In St. Petersburg and Moscow, Yabloko also held small concerts where one could listen to the guitar, lira tedesca and bass viol.

The action in Moscow

The action in Moscow was attended by Svetlana Astrakhantseva, Executive Director of the Moscow Helsinki Group, a human rights organisation liquidated by the Moscow City Court. The human rights activist shared her opinion on why it is necessary to write to political prisoners.

“The main value for any person is, certainly, freedom. Freedom of thought, self-expression, religion, and assembly. All the people to whom we write letters today, and all political prisoners in principle, are people who today are deprived of their physical freedom, because they defended for themselves and for other people all the most important freedoms and values. At the same time, they remain free people inside, in their hearts and in their minds, because they are honest with themselves and with those around them. That is why we want to support them. We want them to be not alone in this honesty,” Svetlana Astrakhantseva said.

In total, more than a hundred political prisoners will receive about a thousand letters and postcards written at the Yabloko actions.
