The trial of the leaders of the civil protest in the Republic of Ingushetia, which lasted more than two years, ended in an extremely tough sentence. Civil activists were equated with terrorists and given sentences comparable to the punishment for murderers and rapists.
The court sentenced Akhmed Barakhoev, Musa Malsagov and Malsag Uzhakhov to nine years of imprisonment in a general regime penal colony, Ismail Nalgiev, Bagaudin Khautiev and Barakh Chemurziev to eight years, and Zarifa Sautiev to seven years and six months of penal colony.
Yabloko believes that this verdict must be reviewed – the leaders of the Ingush protest are innocent and must be immediately released.
The articles of the Criminal Code directed against real criminals cannot and should not be an instrument of pressure on activists and apply to citizens exercising their constitutional right to freedom of assembly.
