Andrei Ivanovich Vorobyov (November 1, 1928 – June 15, 2020) – Soviet and Russian hematologist, academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR and the Russian Academy of Sciences, professor, doctor of medical sciences, Director of the Research Institute of Hematology and Intensive Care, head of the Department of Hematology and Intensive Care of the Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education. First Minister of Healthcare of the Russian Federation.
In 2019, after the high-profile case of Ivan Golunov [when a journalist exposing corruption was arrested in connection with drugs that were planted to him by police], Academician Vorobyov turned to the President of the Russian Federation with a proposal to review all sentences under articles on drugs, “Who else could have been illegally arrested, was innocently convicted, received incomparable punishment under these articles? The case of Ivan Golunov again raised the question of repressive drug policies in the Russian Federation. The answer should be a radical reform of the criminal prosecution system for drug-related crimes”. Dozens of academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences spoke in support of Andrei Vorobyov’s appeal.
