Galina Mikhaleva spoke about gender equality at the “Eight Women” film festival
Press Release, 6.03.2020
Galina Mikhaleva, Chairwoman of the Yabloko Party’s Gender Faction, spoke at the round table on gender equality issues with the topic “Socio-Economic Transformation in Russia (1990 – 2020) and the Status of Women”. The round table was held as part of the Sixth International Film Festival “Eight Women” with the support of the Zhournalistka club (Woman-Journalist) co-chaired by Nadezhda Azhgikhina.
“Unfortunately, when the whole world is moving in one direction – institutional support for gender equality, our country is heading the other way – imposing traditional roles on women,” Prof.Mihaleva emphasised.
The speeches of representatives of women’s movements of the 1990s demonstrated disappointment: they lost influence and many groups ceased to exist. The issues of migrant women and the disastrous situation of gender equality in the North Caucasus were discussed separately.
Journalist Natasha Bitten spoke about the Sexist of the Year Award, which has been supported by the Yabloko party for ten years. Women film directors who won the festival awards also spoke at the festival. It was decided to publish the materials of the round table and intensify public discussion of these issues.
The Sixth International Film Festival “Eight Women” takes place in Moscow, in the Central House of Cinematographers (13 Vasilievskaya St.) on March 1-7.
