“Vladimir Bukovsky realised well that only political work can be productive in the present situation in Russia”.
Grigory Yavlinsky pays tribute to the memory of the legendary human rights defender
Condolences from Grigory Yavlinsky, 28.10.2019
Vladimir Bukovsky, legendary human rights defender and Soviet dissident died at the age of 76. In 2007, Bukovsky supported Yabloko in the State Duma elections; in 2008, Yabloko supported Bukovsky’s nomination for the presidency of Russia.
Grigory Yavlinskym Chairman of the Yabloko Federal Political Committee, expresses condolences on the death of Vladimir Bukovsky:
Vladimir Bukovsky was a legendary dissident: sincere, completely fearless, daring and absolutely principled. He was a consistent fighter for freedom, an opponent of violence against the individual, state totalitarianism, and, therefore, opposed the present Russian government.
As an outstanding defender of law and freedom, Bukovsky realised well that only work in politics can be productive in the present situation in Russia. That is why he supported Yabloko in the 2007 elections, that is why he entered the presidential election in 2008 without any hope of victory.
Bukovsky believed that it was absolutely necessary to identify the vector of the struggle, and participate in the formation of a political alternative.
His assessment of Russian reality was accurate and bitter, but he did not accept the situation and did not become discouraged.
Vladimir Bukovsky, a noble and honest man, will always be alive in our grateful memory.
