Key historians to discuss the lessons of the February Revolution

Russia’s key historians will participate in a panel discussion on “100th anniversary of the February Revolution and the aim of political modernisation in the 21st century” which is to take place in YABLOKO’s office on March 14th.
The following questions will be discussed:
1. Why are the current authorities afraid of talking about the events of 1917-1918?
2. The legitimacy of power and the possibility of political modernisation in 1917 and at present.
3. February parallels: the lessons of the events of 1917 and their meaning for today:
– the specifics of the political elite which was formed during the czarist regime and its influence on the events of 1917;
– the society on the eve of the revolution: from euphoria to retreat from politics and public life;
– the gap between the political elite and the grass-roots, the political leadership issue;
– the reason of the political modernisation failure and the turn towards the national catastrophe.
4. The necessity of a definite legal and socio-political conceptualisation of the events of 1917 and their consequences.
5. The perspectives of Russia and the Constituent Assembly: restoration of legitimacy and historical continuity.
