“We can not tolerate a lesser evil fearing that a greater evil may come”
Blog post at the Ekho Moskvi website by Boris Vishnevsky, MP of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg (the Yabloko faction), 07.10.2016
Today, we will gather by the Solovetsky Stone on Troitskaya Square in St. Petersburg to commemorate Anna Politkovskaya.
Ten years ago, we gathered here for the first time – stunned by the murder, in the pouring rain, having notified each other [of it] in “chain”
Anna’s portrait was brought, candles lit and flowers laid.
And since then, every year on this day – we come here, postponing any important matters…
In one of her last interviews, Politkovskaya said that Dmitry Muratov, Ediotr-in-Chief of Novaya Gazeta [she had been working for], did not allow her to go to Chechnya anymore, because “now the danger is much more serious than in previous years. And I agree with him, because now the danger is caused by specific people, and particularly for me – by the people who promised to kill me. ”
She gave a straight answer to the direct question “who were these people?”, [head of Chechnya] Ramzan Kadyrov. “Because he does not like my consistent position regarding the fact that he is a state bandit, and this is one of the most tragic errors of Putin.” She also added, “We must be honest. We can not tolerate a lesser evil fearing that a greater evil may come. We must fight to the end.”
