On 7 April, the Yabloko Party University will host a lecture by Yaroslav Ashikhmin, cardiologist and therapist, Candidate of Medical Sciences, entitled “Unexplained Symptoms: Rare Diseases, Psychosomatics and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome”.
Psychosomatic disorders are explained by the fact that emotional experiences are refracted through the “prism” of the body, whilst modern diagnostic methods detect virtually no changes in the areas whose sensations cause significant suffering.
Situations in which the body generates symptoms in the absence of disease, accompanied by heightened bodily sensitivity, are among the most complex in medicine. In such cases, a stent cannot be inserted or an organ transplanted: what is needed is a team of several highly qualified specialists. It is possible to help in such cases, but only when the person themselves wishes it and works in partnership with their doctors. Doctors, in turn, must not draw the person ever deeper into illness.
At the lecture, we will examine how stress, anxiety, psychosomatic disorders (PSD) and chronic fatigue syndrome are interconnected.
We will discuss how to avoid an endless marathon of tests and why it is not always wise to rely on test results alone.
We will look at the key contemporary methods of treating psychosomatic disorders and strategies for stress management.
The lecture will take place at the Yabloko party office (Moscow, 31 Pyatnitskaya Street, Building 2) on 7 April at 19:00.
Admission is free with prior registration (https://party-yabloko.timepad.ru/event/3889102/).
