Yabloko invites all Russian citizens to join the action of writing letters to political prisoners, a regular monthly action held at the party’s offices in Moscow and Russia’s regions. During the action anyone can sign a postcard or compose a letter to a person persecuted on political grounds for their words, thoughts or honest work. For participants’ convenience, Yabloko regularly updates the schedule of actions of writing letters to political prisoners in the Moscow and other cities across the country.

According to human rights defenders, as of today there are more than 1,300 political prisoners in Russia – people who are awaiting trial or have already been convicted on politically motivated charges.

Most political prisoners who have had at least one opportunity to communicate with someone through correspondence have emphasised that attention and support, even from a stranger, provides enormous emotional help, especially when one is isolated from society and denied access to information. This is why Yabloko regularly holds actions of writing letters to political prisoners where people, even those not personally acquainted with political prisoners, can write a few kind, supportive words, share a story, and let them know that they have not been forgotten, that they are not alone, and that there is hope.

We emphasise that writing to political prisoners is lawful and safe.
