The deadline for accepting documents from candidates for the post of Human Rights Commissioner in the Republic of Karelia has been closed. The Yabloko party faction in the Legislative Assembly of Karelia nominated Olga Tuzhikova, a member of Yabloko, a deputy of the Petrozavodsk City Council, lawyer and environmentalist, for the post. The Yabloko member’s candidacy was supported by the head of the Loukhsky municipal district Olga Kvyatkevich, the environmental organisation SPOK, the Veterans of Karelia organisation, the public organisations for the protection of citizens’ rights Soglasie and Zaonezhye, as well as the Green Alternative party and the Dobrospas search and rescue squad. The media noted that no other candidate for the post of Human Rights Commissioner in Karelia had such broad support in the entire existence of this post.
The next stage of the Ombudsperson elections is the consideration of the candidacies by the Human Rights Commissioner in the Russian Federation Tatyana Moskalkova. After that, the candidacies will be discussed and a new Ombudsperson will be elected by the Legislative Assembly of Karelia.
In addition to the Yabloko deputy Olga Tuzhikova, two more candidates are running for the post of Ombudsperson – a head of a rural settlement and a retired public prosecutor. The latter is supported by the Governor of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov.
