On the 15th anniversary of the murder of lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova by neo-Nazis, activists and leaders of the Yabloko party laid flowers at an impromptu memorial at the place of the murder in Prechistenka street in Moscow.
Yabloko Chairman Nikolai Rybakov, member of the Federal Political Committee Ivan Bolshakov, Deputy Chairman of the Moscow Yabloko Kirill Goncharov, Deputy Chairman of the Moscow Yabloko Andrei Morev and others participated in the mourning ceremony.
“The meaning of our return here every year is not only the memory of Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova, but also a reminder to ourselves and people that we must never forget and leave without conclusions those terrible events that occurred already in our modern history. When we finally learn to draw conclusions, reflect, talk about this, then these events will stop repeating,” Rybakov noted.
Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova were shot dead by neo-Nazis from the “Combat Organisation of Russian Nationalists” on 19 January, 2009. In November of the same year, the killers of Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova were arrested and brought to trial in 2011. Nikita Tikhonov was sentenced to life imprisonment, Yevgenia Khasis received 18 years in prison.
