The Ulyanovsk branch of Yabloko honoured the memory of Acad. Andrei Sakharov on his birthday

On 21 May, Dmitry Gondarenko, Chairman of the Ulyanovsk branch of Yabloko, together with Yabloko supporters, laid flowers at the memorial of the victims of political repression on the birthday of Acad. Andrei Sakharov (1921-1989), a Soviet scientist, theoretical physicist, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, first and honorary chairman of the Memorial society and human rights defender.
Acad. Andrei Sakharov lived in Ulyanovsk for several years. From 1942 to 1945, Sakharov worked at a cartridge factory (Volodarka). It was in Ulyanovsk where the future academician and Nobel Prize winner came out with his first invention. In addition, in Ulyanovsk, Sakharov met his first wife, and his first child was born here.
The Simbirsk Memorial society regularly holds events in memory of the scientist and human rights defender. On the Andrei Sakharov’s anniversary, members of the Memorial society together with representatives of the regional branch of the Yabloko party laid flowers at the memorial site of the victims of political repressions in the Ulyanovsk region, and also organised the screening of the documentary “The Sakharov Case”.
