On 30 October, the Yabloko party will hold an online marathon “People, Do Not Kill Each Other!”, dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the State Terror. Members of the Yabloko party from over 50 regions of Russia will take part in the action and read out the names of the victims of Stalinist repressions online. Anyone interested can connect to the online broadcast through the link on YouTube.
The viewers of the online marathon will not only be able to hear about the fates of the repressed, but also learn about the history of memorial sites in different Russian regions.
As part of the event, a launch of the new edition of the book by the famous Russian photographer and historian Yuri Brodsky will also take place at the office of the Yabloko party in Moscow. The author will tell about the history of the creation of the book “Solovki. The Labyrinth of Transformations”. The book launch will be conducted by Nadezhda Azhgikhina, a journalist and Director of PEN-Moscow. The launch of the book starts at 14:00, admittance by registration in the link.
Throughout the marathon, Yabloko will be raising funds to support the family of Mikhail Afanasyev, an imprisoned journalist, the winner of the Andrei Sakharov Prize “For Journalism as an Act”, and a member of the Yabloko party. He has been in the pre-trial detention centre of Abakan for more than six months. Mikhail was charged with “dissemination of fakes about the army of the Russian Federation using one’s official position” under Article 207.3, Part 2, Paragraph “a” of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. After Afanasiev was taken into custody, his family was left without a breadwinner. The Yabloko party opened a fundraiser to help his wife and children.
On this day, Yabloko regional offices will also hold events dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repressions.
It should be noted that this year the Moscow authorities refused to give a permission for the action “Returning the Names” – the annual event organised by the Memorial human rights group by the Solovetsky stone in Lubyanka Square in Moscow.
