Grigory Yavlinsky: Vladimir Putin is personally responsible for the lives of Novaya Gazeta journalists
Grigory Yavlinsky’s web-site, 18.03.2021
There are journalists in Russia who risk their lives writing about atrocious crimes committed by the authorities. We are talking about the journalists of Novaya Gazeta. The response to these courageous journalistic investigations is not only propaganda attacks: journalists are threatened with revenge, the Moscow office of the newspaper is attacked with a chemical poisonous substance. All these are real direct threats to the lives of a large number of people.
I will repeat what I have said earlier. Russian President Vladimir Putin personally bears full responsibility for the lives and health of journalists from the opposition Novaya Gazeta, in particular Yelena Milashina and Editor-in-Chief Dmitry Muratov. Just as he is responsible for the lives of all his opponents – politicians, human rights activists and Russian citizens – who may become victims of political terror, death squads, private military companies and other mercenaries of federal and regional authorities.
The facts reported in the investigation by Novaya Gazeta on extrajudicial executions and the incident with the possible use of a chemical poisonous substance against the staff of the newspaper office should be immediately investigated by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.
