With each passing month, the number of political prisoners continues to grow. According to the Memorial human rights organisation, there are currently 952 political prisoners in Russia. In total, the human rights organisation believes more than 3,000 people have been deprived of their freedom for political reasons.
Yabloko invites all to support political prisoners and announces upcoming actions of writing letters to political prisoners in Moscow and Russian regions.
Activists of the Kemerovo branch of Yabloko explain to new participants of the action what they can write about to people in detention, and how important this is for them:
“What do political prisoners write about? About their everyday life, walks, food, what books they read, and what films they watched when free. They write that news from the outside comes with a delay and they lack free information. For some, letters from the outside world provide public protection against unlawful pressure from the penal colony administration.”
Anyone can take part in the actions of writing letters to political prisoners. Those unable to come to the party office, can send letters to political prisoners independently using our instruction.
The actions will be held in Yabloko’s regional branches all over Russia from 24 May through to 7 June. The list of the regional branches, addresses and dates are published here.
