Sergei Pogodin, director of School No 4 in Nelidovo, the Tver region, was dismissed from his post on 8 October, 2013, on the basis of an order from the acting head of the district administration, however, the document did not specify any reason for termination of the labour contract. According to local residents, his dismissal was caused by purely political reasons: in the recent elections of September 8 Sergei Pogodin was number two on YABLOKO’s list in the elections to the City Council of Deputies. Today, on October 10, 2013, law enforcement officers attempted to get into the office of the Krasnodar branch of the YABLOKO party (presumably, these were officers from the Center for Combating Extremism). This happened at about 2:30 p.m. The police insisted that they needed Andrei Rudomakha, Chair of the regional branch of YABLOKO and Coordinator of the Environmental Watch on North Caucasus. The police also insisted that they had to “survey the premises”. However, Andrei Rudomakha who really was in the office in the morning went to another city at day time. Read more »

An action in memory of the murdered journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya took place in Voronezh on October 7. The activists placed the portraits of Anna Politkovskaya, murdered journalist and writer Yuri Shchekochikhin, murdered human rights activist Galina Starovoytova, murdered human rights activist Stanislav Merkelov, murdered journalist Anastasia Baburova and murdered journalist Dmitry Kholodov at the square and lit the candles.

The Investigative Committee of Karelia opened a criminal investigation on unlawful allocation of land in the Prionezhsky region. The criminal case is politically motivated and has absolutely no legal basis under it, it is targeted at removing Svetlana Chechil from the contest for the post of the head of the administration of the Prionezhsky district. The Committee of civil initiatives conducted a conference on “The first single voting day: results, tendencies, perspectives”on October 3. The experts discussed the results of the regional elections and proposed their initiatives on the reform of the election legislation. Such initiatives as the abolition of the municipal filter at the gubernatorial elections, the rebound of the electoral blocks, the introduction of a deposit for non-parliamentary parties for participation in the elections, increasing of the campaign period in mass media were discussed.
