Former head of Petrozavodsk Galina Shirshina appealed in court against the decision of the city council on her dismissal. She argues that the [deputies’] thesis on her failure to implement the powers of the mayor are false. In parallel with the law suit she will help YABLOKO in the [parliamentary] election campaign. Sergei Mitrokhin sentenced to a fine for a picket in defence of the Russian Constitution

Mayor of Petrozavodsk Galina Shirshina nominated for prestigious European Award

A popular Finish party, the Swedish People’s Party of Finland (SFP), together with its Women’s Association Svenska Kvinnoförbundet announced their nomination of Ms. Galina Shirshina, Mayor of Petrozavodsk, Karelia, for the prestigious European award – The LeaDeR Award. They named Shirshina one the key liberal players on regional and local level. The finalists will be announced at the ceremony in Brussels on 25 April, 2016. The award is a sign of outstanding work of liberal and democrat politicians on the municipal, local or regional level of government.

Emilia Slabunova elected YABLOKO Chairperson

Emilia Slabunova, MP of the Legislative Assembly, the Republic of Karelia, was elected new YABLOKO Chairperson. She won in the second round over Lev Shlosberg, leader of the Pskov branch of YABLOKO: 91 delegate out of 154 voted for Slabunova and 56 for Shlosberg. Seven ballots were recognized void.

On 25 November, 2015, the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly adopted the draft resolution entitled “Recognizing the role of human rights defenders and the need for their protection”. The UN General Assembly resolution urges the states to recognize the important and legitimate role of human rights defenders, condemn violence and discrimination against them and provide an opportunity for work of human rights defenders.
