The Moscow Basmanny Court sent Valery Kostenok to a pre-trial detention centre for two months, despite the fact that the public prosecutor’s office requested that he is placed under home arrest. Yabloko activist became the 14th defendant in the “mass riots” case in Moscow on July 27.

Nearly 50,000 people took part in a rally for fair elections and against arbitrariness, which took place in Sakharov Prospect in Moscow on 10 August. Three municipal deputies from Yabloko – Yelena Rusakova, Andrei Morev and Yelena Filina were members of the organising committee of the action.

Yabloko’s Valery Kostenok is charged with “mass-scale riots” (Article 212 Part 2 of the Criminal Code). Tomorrow, on 12 August 12 the Basmanny Court will determine a preventive measure for him. Kostenok will spend this night in the detention center.

According to Valery Kostenok, Yabloko member, eight people rang at the door of the apartment where he lives and presented themselves as the Investigative Committee. They said that they have a search warrant and asked to open, otherwise, they promised to break the door.

A rally Save Our Forests was held in Novosibirsk. The rally was dedicated to large-scale fires in the Siberian taiga and inaction and indifference of the Russian authorities. Members of the regional branch of the Yabloko party supported the citywide protest.

Boris Vishnevsky, head of the Yabloko faction in the St.Petersburg Legislative Assembly, urged Alexander Beglov, interim Governor of St. Petersburg, to immediately intervene in the situation with the resettlement of the residents of the House of Radio and preserve the historical intended purpose of the building.

The police came home to Oleg Rodin, Chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of Yabloko, and Alexei Sadomovsky, Deputy Chairman of the party branch. Police officers also came to other political and civil activists in Nizhny Novgorod. The police gave them warnings about participating in an unpermitted rally in Nizhny Novgorod on 10 August.

Members of the Irkutsk regional branch of the Yabloko party held single-person pickets. The action was dedicated to forest fires raging in Siberia, including in the Irkutsk region and Yakutia. Sergei Mitrokhin, member of the Federal Political Committee of the Yabloko party, will appeal in court against the refusal to register him as candidate in the Moscow City Duma election. He will not appeal to the Moscow City Electoral Commission again, because he assumes that the Moscow City Electoral Commission “will do the same trick” – instead of registering him, it will send him to the district electoral commission for the third time.

August 7 marks the 60th anniversary of Viktor Valentinovich Kogan-Yasny, head of the Regional Civil Initiative – the Right to Life and Civil Dignity public organisation, one of the founders of the Memorial human rights centre. Since 1995, Viktor Kogan-Yasny has been expert of the Yabloko party and adviser to Grigory Yavlinsky, Chairman of the party’s Federal Political Committee.

The Vologda City Court refused to satisfy the demands of the representatives of the LDPR party, who tried to annul registration of four out of twelve candidates from Yabloko to the Vologda City Duma. Claims of the same type were submitted to court against Yabloko candidates Dmitry Tarasov, Lyubov Kryksu, Alexei Nikitin and Alexander Svitin.

The Central Electoral Commission rejected the complaint of Andrei Babushkin, candidate nominated by Yabloko to run for the Moscow City Duma election. Earlier, the Moscow City Electoral Commission supported the decision of the district electoral commission, removing Babushkin from the election due to alledgely faulty signatures. Andrei Babushkin is a well-known human rights activist, member of the Presidential Human Rights Council and member of the Yabloko Federal Bureau.

The electoral commissions of Nizhny Novgorod registered Yabloko’s Yevgeny Dolgopolov and Nikita Antonenko as candidates for deputies of the City Duma of Nizhny Novgorod. Svetlana Falkonskaya was denied registration due to insufficient number of valid voter signatures.

Yabloko activists from the Krasnoyarsk branch of the party took part in the rally for resignation of Alexander Uss, Governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The discontent of more than two thousand people who came out to rally in Krasnoyarsk was caused by the lack of actions by the authorities in the situation of large-scale forest fires in Siberia, poor air quality in Krasnoyarsk, the recent flood in Kansk and the problems of people decieted when buying apartments.

The situation has been escalating on the threashold of possible protest actions in Moscow. The authorities are intimidating people: dozens of criminal cases return us to the period of reprisals after Bolotnaya Square [rallies in Moscow]. On the other hand, those calling on young people to take to the streets and relying on young people, compete in radicalism: it seems that they are afraid to show prudence, since in this case others will immediately replace them. In this situation, the possibility of aggression and violence is very great.

Today, at 18:10, police detained three campaigners from the team of Yevgeny Bunimovich, registered Yabloko candidate for elections to the Moscow City Duma. The campaigners were detained near the Vodny Stadion metro station when they were handing out leaflets calling to vote for Bunimovich in the constituency No. 6 (Golovinsky, Khovrino and Zapadnoye Degunino districts).

The Tula branch of Yabloko has collected the signatures required for registration of party candidates in the September elections to the city and regional parliaments. 6,529 residents of the region signed up for the participation of the Yabloko party in the elections to the Tula Regional Duma, 140 collectors of signatures conducted this work during a month. And 2,393 residents of Tula signed up in support of Yabloko candidates in the elections to the Tula City Duma, the collection of signatures was carried out by 85 collectors and lasted two weeks.

370 candidates for St. Petersburg municipal deputies nominated by Yabloko managed to get registration in the elections. The Yabloko election headquarters continues to appeal in the higher electoral commissions and courts the refusals of registration to another 191 party candidates.
