Grigory Yavlinsky: “This is not about Yabloko’s fate — it is about Russia’s fate”

The Supreme Court has granted the claim brought by the Rodina party and has cancelled the registration of Yabloko’s federal list of candidates for the State Duma elections. The decision will be appealed. Here goes the Statement by Grigory Yavlinsky, Chair of the party’s Federal Political Committee:

Ours is a very simple, short and absolutely clear programme — which is precisely why people of differing views and positions are starting to support it.

Removing from the elections a party with precisely this programme, without any real grounds, is a self-exposure of the political system. This decision speaks to the importance of our programme far more than any official election result could. It is evident that the demand for peace and freedom has today proved considerably stronger than the authorities anticipated.

Voting for Yabloko is an opportunity for Russian citizens to declare the need for an alternative. It is a chance to say: in Russia, more and more people believe that the political priority should be preserving human life, and that the goal should be reaching a ceasefire agreement.

Cutting Yabloko out of the elections means refusing dialogue with people who ask questions the authorities find uncomfortable. This is not so much about Yabloko’s candidates as about those who support them or might support them.

It also means a further narrowing of Russia’s political and diplomatic options.

The authorities have either been frightened by all this or fail to understand it, and so they are removing Yabloko from the elections.

We do not agree with the decision that has been taken, and we will appeal it.
