The head of the Yabloko faction in the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, Alexander Shishlov, spoke at the 11th International Conference “Human Rights Activities in Modern Russia: Problems and Their Solutions” at the St. Petersburg University of Technology Management and Economics.
He noted the continuing assault on constitutional human rights in Russia. The concept of “political prisoner” returned to the country, and freedom of information was significantly limited by repressive laws threatening criminal prosecution for disagreement with the authorities.
“The persecution of dissent, further tightening of criminal legislation and the recent abolition of administrative res judicata for ‘discreditation’ – all this not only violates the constitutional rights of citizens, it deprives people of the opportunity to receive diverse and objective information about what is happening in Russia and in the world, and spreads fear and mutual intolerance in society”, Alexander Shishlov stated at the conference.
On the eve of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in WWII, Alexander Shishlov emphasised its special significance in Russia.
“Almost all veterans who survived the war and understood, in contrast to current generations of politicians, the horror of war, have now passed away. The world is changing rapidly. The international order formed after 1945 has ended. Humanity faces a real threat of a new world war, more than at any time in the past 80 years. Therefore, this Victory Day anniversary is not only a day of remembrance. It is a milestone that requires, for the sake of our future, understanding the lessons of war and Victory [over fascism in WWII], the lessons needed to protect the most important human right – the right to life”, Alexander Shishlov stated.
In conclusion, Alexander Shishlov noted, “For us in Russia, after three years of the special military operation, the main task in human rights is to conclude a ceasefire and stop daily killing of people”.
