Yesterday was my final working day in Eastern Siberia.

When I was going to Lake Baikal, I was convinced that the situation with the garbage on the shore had changed and garbage was no longer there. Unfortunately, it had not changed. Therefore, before leaving Baikalsk for Buryatia, together with Grigory Gribenko and colleagues from the Irkutsk branch of Yabloko, we held a clean-up of the shore. The main garbage – as usual left by tourists – is plastic bottles and packaging, glass, disposable dishes, cans, and food leftovers. We sorted the garbage into fractions to be recycled, which was done later in Ulan-Ude.

A working day in the Irkutsk region, or how to get to the shore of Baikal and not be able to see Baikal

In the morning Anna Shlomina, our candidate for the State Duma elections, the founder of the public organisation for the protection of animals “ZooZabota”, showed me the Centre for sterilisation of pets, which works in the city at discounted prices. The main problem is the lack of drugs that are required to perform operations and treat animals. Sometimes they can only be obtained in Moscow and then sent to Irkutsk. Not only people but also animals suffer from sanctions and bans on the imports of foreign medicines. I wanted to write “four-legged”, but deleted it. Because after the clinic, Anna and I went to a shelter for homeless animals.

After a decision of the St.Petersburg Electoral Commission, Territorial Electoral Commission No 30 of St.Petersburg had to register Boris Vishnevsky for the election to the St.Petersburg Legislative Assembly in a single-mandate constituency.

Eleven members of the electoral commission voted for registration, and one abstained. The territorial electoral commission did not have any new complaints about the documents submitted for the registration by Boris Vishnevsky, Deputy Chairman of the Yabloko party.
Today the St. Petersburg Electoral Commission overturned the decision of Territorial Electoral Commission No 30 to deny registration to Boris Vishnevsky. In connection with this, the Territorial Electoral Commission had to hold a new meeting on the registration of Boris Vishnevsky as a candidate for the election of deputies to the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg in single-mandate constituency No 2 (the Central District).

Three municipal deputies were injured in the explosion during a municipal council meeting in St.Petersburg

On 4 August, an explosion occurred on the porch of the municipal council of the Smolninskoye municipality in St.Petersburg. The explosion happened during the council meeting. According to a number of media, Georgy Sklyadnev, an employee of the Smolninskoe municipal administration, told the Centre for Combating Extremism that this explosion was arranged by order of Grigory Rankov, the current head of the municipality.

The nature of the region starts brining you joy already on the approach to the Dmitry Hvorostovsky airport. Endless taiga, hills, and the great Yenisei river. At the same time, it is hard to breathe in Krasnoyarsk – because of the large number of enterprises (primarily the KrAZ-Rusal aluminum plant) and road transport. All this is combined with the location of the city in a basin and high humidity from the Yenisei, which, after the construction of the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station, stopped freezing [in winter] (a separate natural disaster). Aa additional load is brought by a combination of high-rise buildings and low-rise buildings (a specifics of the city construction), and coal and stove heating.

The St. Petersburg City Court found no grounds for canceling the decision on registration of Viktor Boldin, the candidate to the Legislative Assembly from the Yabloko party in the single-mandate constituency No. 14 (Kalininsky District). The claim was filed by Alexei Zinchuk, the candidate from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and Yabloko candidate’s rival. Zinchuk said that he was not going to appeal the decision of the City Court.

Sergei Adamovich Kovalev has always been a legendary figure for politicians of my generation. His confrontation with the Soviet regime, the struggle for human rights were, certainly, his internal conviction. I think he would have followed his principles, even if he had to act alone.
