Yevgeny Gontmakher on overcoming social stratification: We need a different economy
Press Release, 14.07.2025

The Esli Byt Tochnym (To Be Precise) project has published an analysis of Russians’ incomes from 2022 to the first quarter of 2025, according to which inequality is growing in the country. Despite sanctions for some and state assistance for others, the rich have become richer and the poor poorer. Researchers note that the growth of inequality in 2023 in our country is record-breaking since the early nineties, while in 2022 inequality sharply decreased due to economic shocks for the rich and state support for the poor, over 2023-2024 the Gini index (an indicator of the level of inequality in society) increased by 2.5%, to 0.408.

Memory means responsibility, not a personality cult
Statement by the Kaliningrad regional branch of the Yabloko Party, 14.07.2025

Photo: Alexander Dudin. Demonstration. 1989
“We must become a country of convictions, without persecution and violence… All this will only be possible when the foundations for the revival of a totalitarian regime and uncontrolled power disappear.” A. D. Sakharov, from the collection “Speaks”, New York, 1974.
In connection with the opening of a bust of Iosif Dzhugashvili (Stalin) at the Baltic Fleet Officers’ House in Kaliningrad on 9 July 2025, the Kaliningrad regional branch of the Yabloko Party considers it necessary to express its position.
We consider the revival of Stalin’s personality cult unacceptable – a figure under whose rule millions of USSR citizens were subjected to political repressions, exiled, imprisoned in camps, and executed. Among them were thousands of officers, commanders, and sailors. These facts are officially recognised by the state: the Russian Federation law “On the Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repressions” directly indicates the necessity of restoring justice and memory of those who suffered.

Why do they hold such views? All these issues will be discussed by Ilya Vaskin, senior lecturer and researcher at the Centre for Middle Eastern, Caucasian and Central Asian Studies at the Higher School of Economics and author of the Telegram channel “Iranian Politics”.
