Helsinki 2018: The Lost Future

Grigory Yavlinsky on the upcoming meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, 13.07.2018

The summit in Finland and the way the Moscow establishment and the Russian media are waiting for it is an indication of the position of Russia in the present world. A year ago, a meeting with Donald Trump in Hamburg on the G-20 was presented as a provoking interest but generally natural political event, also inscribed in the context of a high-level global event (see [my article] “We Are of No Interest to Trump” of July 2017 ). However, even then, the absence of meaning and subject for normal political analysis was very noticeable.

Activists of the party went into the streets together with thousands of fellow citizens

Press Release, 04.07.2018

Yabloko was the first political party that opposed the initiative of the government, and last week activists of the party together with thousands of fellow citizens in many regions of Russia took actions against the pension reform.

The geography of protest actions is from Pskov in the North-West to Kamchatka in the Far East, and the formats of actions vary from mass-scale joint rallies with parliamentary parties and representatives of non-systemic opposition to single-person pickets and flash mobs.

Honest and brave: 15 years since the death of Yuri Shchekochikhin, journalist and Yabloko’s MP

FB post by Grigory Yavlinsky, 03.07.2018

15 years have passed since the death of Yuri Shchekochikhin, journalist and Yabloko’s MP. One of the most honest and courageous journalists in the history of modern Russia was brutally murdered. There was virtually no investigation – the case of Shchekochikhin’s death was closed several times without giving any result. But those who knew Yuri Petrovich Shchekochikhin, who worked with him, know what was there behind his death. Throughout his life Yuri Shchekochikhin fought for the truth, wrote about corruption in the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Public Prosecutor General’s Office, and investigated explosions of blocks of flats in Moscow and Volgodonsk. Shchekochikhin was incompatible with this deceitful and criminal system, and it killed him. Read more »

Grigory Yavlinsky on Oleg Sentsov and Russian punitive system

It is 2018, Russia is hosting the World Cup, Trump is flying to Putin and Oleg Sentsov is dying in a penal colony

Grigory Yavlinsky’s FB page, 03.07.2018

It is the 51st day, that [Ukrainian film director] Oleg Sentsov is starving in the Labytnangi city [by the North pole], Yamal. Whatever the army of state bureaucrats invented, Sentsov is on the verge of life and death. If you he continues [his hunger strike] in the same way, a 41-year-old film director, whose fault is not proven at all, can die. Keeping Oleg Sentsov in custody is legally unjustified, poltically disgusting, and morally immoral and inhuman.

About 4,000 people die each year in Russian prisons. Every tenth death is suicide. The death rate among prisoners in Russia is about 60 cases per 10,000 people. This is two times higher than the average in Europe. Russia is leading as of the number of prisoners: there are 440 prisoners for every 100,000 people in Russia. In European countries, the percentage of those in prison is almost four times lower.

Emilia Slabunova on the laws violating privacy of correspondence, telephone conversations and personal life

Emilia Slabunova’s FB page, 01.07.2018

It is a big question whether there will be a digital economy in Russia. But it is a fact that since 1 July we will have a digital police state: the “Yarovaya package” [of laws envisaging a six-month storage of all the digital data] has come into force, which virtually crosses out Article 23 articles of the Constitution. It guarantees privacy of correspondence, telephone conversations and personal life.

“The rise in fuel prices is the result of governing of Vladimir Putin and his team”

Yabloko’s Bureau Decision No 2083,  25.06.2018

The rise in fuel prices after the end of Vladimir Putin’s presidential campaign is a natural result of his governing.  In most regions of the Russian Federation, prices for various types of fuel rose by 10 – 15 per cent, and in some regions by 20 per cent or more.

Such a rise in fuel prices will hit not only drivers, but also all consumers, since most goods are transported by trucks and cars. Expenses for transportation will grow, so prices will also rise.

The World Cup in Russia began with a defeat: 5:0! The authorities scored five unanswered goals to the people.

Grigory Yavlinsky’s web-site, 16.06.2018

Even before the starting whistle, the account was opened by Russia’s Investigation Committee with a final arrest of long-resisting leader of the Serpukhov district [of the Moscow region] Alexander Shestun. At the first minute of the match, thanks to the passing move of the government Dmitry Medvedev raised his retirement age. And virtually in the next attack, Dmitry Medvedev made a brace and raised the VAT. In the second half, the Supreme Court of Karelia from a penalty brought the score to the devastating blow cancelling the acquittal to human rights defender Yury Dmitriyev – 4:0. The point in the opening match was delivered the next day by Putin’s Press Secretary: Dmitry Peskov struck the people with a blow from the penalty spot, explaining that Putin’s promises not to raise the retirement age until he is president meant nothing because “it was a long time ago”.
