Political Prisoners in the Republic of Karelia Must Be Released
Johan Ekman, spokesperson for international affairs of SFP, on the situation in Karelia
The precarious situation of the political opposition in Russia was demonstrated once again on the 26th of March when Olga Zaletskaya and Alexandra Kornilova, active members of the Yabloko Party, were arrested on suspected politically motivated charges.
– It is outrageous and sad that the political opposition is facing this kind of treatment. Olga Zaletskaya and Alexandra Kornilova must immediately be released from prison, comments Johan Ekman, spokesperson for international affairs of SFP. A Big number of criminal cases against political opponents of Governor Alexander Khudilainen of the republic of Karelia has been filed in the past year both against YABLOKO members and politicians not related to the party.
– According to our knowledge, it seems the scale of harassment for the YBLOKO led liberal opposition is especially tough in the Republic of Karelia, maybe because they have been successful in challenging those in power. We need a strong international condemnation of this kind of unlawful action, Ekman continues.
