Moscow YABLOKO opposes to the appointment of Tatyana Moskalkova to the post of Ombudsperson
Press release, 31.03.2016
On 30 March, the Regional Council of the Moscow branch of YABLOKO addressed the deputies of the State Duma of the Russian Federation with an appeal to reject the candidacy of Tatyana Moskalkova, police Major General, to the post of Ombudsperson.
According to Moscow YABLOKO, the probable appointment of Moskalkova is “a mockery of common sense”. Moskalkova initiated a bill “On the attempt on ethical norms” [a bill introducing criminal responsibility for insulting ethical norms]. She voted for “anti-orphan law“[the law banning the U.S. citizens from adopting Russian orphans which was adopted in response to the Magnitsky Act], the law limiting the distribution of information on non-traditional relations [Gay Propaganda Law], the law on insulting the religious feelings of others.
“A person who infringes on the rights of minorities cannot be a human rights defender whose main function is to defend the minorities,” the statement says.
“With her stance Tatyana Moskalkova is certainly not going to do that [defend human rights].” Mitrokhin claims that if she is appointed, the situation will come out the worst for the NGOs representatives who are being persecuted as “foreign agents”.
The day before Tatyana Moskalkova’s candidacy to the post of Ombudsperson was introduced into the State Duma by the Just Russia party.
