WWF demands from the Interior Minister to investigate the circumstances of the arrest of ecologists by Governor’s dacha

The World Wide Fund for Nature Russia (WWF Russia) appealed to Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev to investigate the actions of the authorities when members of the YABLOKO party and environmentalists were detained during the “protest picnic” by “Tkachyov’s [Governor of the Krasnodar Area] palace”.

"WWF calls to the Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev demanding to conduct an official investigation of the actions of police officers involved in the attack against environmentalists", runs the WWF statement.

"It is amazing that the authorities chose a violent unlawful way of resolution of the accumulated problems in the region. This is a dead way exercised by a violent, rather than democratic state demonstrating complete disregard to the will of its citizens," states the WWF.

Earlier YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin also sent an appeal to the head of the Interior Ministry stating that protecting illegal constructions law enforcement officers had not only violated the Russian law, but also the internal regulations of the Ministry.

He also forwarded appeals Russian Ombudsman Vladimir Lukin and head of the Presdiential Commission on Human Rights Alexander Fedotov also informing them about unacceptable conditions in the prison where the activists have been kept.

Mitrokhin also appealed to Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika demanding to adopt measures in his disposal against Governor of the Krasnodar Region Alexander Tkachyov who in violation of the law had built his country house on the forest land and fenced public territories. Also cuttings of the unique endemic Pitsunda pine included into the Red Book and protected by the state were made during construction works.
