United Russia determined its ideology

November 25, 2009

By Galina Mikhalyova, Executive Secretary of YABLOKOs Political Committee, on the results of the United Russia congress

The congress of the United Russia party resembles the congresses of the communist party of the Soviet Union of the Brezhnevs stagnation period, the present United Russia congress lacked only young pioneers saluting their elder comrades and the statue of the Lenin. The key thing which is common between the two congresses is their absurdity, an obvious discrepancy between the declared goals and the reality. The [proclaimed] conservative modernisation ideologeme is something like dry water.

Modernisation without the institution of political competition is impossible in the modern world. It is impossible to build hostile relations with neighbours and influential countries even in the situation of high oil and gas prices and the state oriented at the raw exports. Raw should be sold, however terms and conditions should be negotiated.

Our leaders obviously think that our people are a crowd of obedient idiots. The first is more or less correct. However, the second is not. Simply this is not obvious to everyone, like it was not obvious at the [Soviet] stagnation period.
