The Yabloko faction insists on an independent parliamentary enquiry into the causes of the “Kursk” submarine disaster

Press release, 19.08.2000
Reaction of Alexei Melnikov to the declaration of the head of the North Fleet Vice-Admiral M. Motsak and the speech of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Government I. Klebanov

The deputy of the Yabloko faction in the State Duma Alexei Melnikov made the following statement in an interview available on the Yabloko server today:

Yabloko thinks that the officials of the Government and the Navy should not make any assumptions that the crew of the submarine “Kursk” is dead until all rescue possibilities have been exhausted. At present there are still such possibilities, they are related only to international assistance.

We will be able, however, to discuss for a long time to come the reasons for the submarine disaster, the condition of its hull and other technical details. This is important information, which people are waiting for. But we should bear in mind that the fate of the people is a special issue – the families of the crew are waiting for them and it is inadmissible to deprive these people of any hope, until every available chance of rescuing the crew has been used.

It is bewildering and disgraceful that the crew of the “Kursk” began to be buried at the very moment when a rescue operation with the participation of Norwegian and British rescue teams was about to start. Nothing prevents the Government or the leadership of the Navy from issuing a statement about the end of the operation.

The Yabloko Association believes that hope is not completely lost yet and refuses to believe that the sailors of the “Kursk” submarine have died. The technical statements of Vice-Admiral M. Motsak or the reasoning of Deputy Prime Minister I. Klebanov about the alleged “theoretical chances” for the rescue of the sailors are obviously not based on sufficient facts.
