If our examination showed that there is
no discrepancy, and that theoretical synthesis of the two
aforesaid statements is possible, then it is possible also
in practice to persist with a respective opinion, in any
case, in a sphere where arguments still play some role.
As the "passions" which "have done more in
human history than the mind" (Diderot) today
are shaped into a reasonable form, then, in any case for
the part of a society which considers itself a thinking
one, these arguments can seem to have some weight. It is
enough to break one of the idols of our intelligentsia'smentality
("a nation's happiness lies in self- determination")
to approach the solution of many of our spiritual, economic
and political problems.
