Grigory Yavlinsky discussed with US Vice President Joseph Biden the prospects of a joint Russia-NATO ABM system and political situation in Russia

Press Release
March 10, 2011

Development of Russia-US strategic relations on the basis of the mutual assured destruction (MAD) concept had become outdated already long ago, such a statement was made by Dr.Grigory Yavlinsky, member of YABLOKO’s Political Committee, during the meeting with US Vice President Joseph Biden.

According to Yavlinsky, we should all abolish the old view on the Russia-US relations as a zero-sum game, when a success of one of the parties means a defeat of the other one.

Yavlinsky also noted that to hit this goal the parties have to be more dynamic in adopting meaningful decisions in the field of joint anti-ballistic missile defence (ABM) that had been advocated by Yavlinsky and other YABLOKO members since 1998. In particular, Grigory Yavlinsky stressed the importance of implementation of the statements on creation of a joint Russia-NATO AMB system in Europe made during the November summit of NATO where Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had participated.

Yavlinsky considers a joint ABM be the most significant area of Russian-American relations in the filed of security which has good prospects and is vitally important not only for both the countries but for the entire world.

Grigory Yavlinsky and Joe Biden also discussed the political situation in Russia. Yavlinsky noted that the main difficulties of the political situation in Russia, in particular, absence of the key democratic procedures, had been obvious to everyone for a long time already. However, he added that it would be important to realise that the solution of the problems implied dismantling of the system created in Russia in 1990s, and this process would be more complicated and deeper than simple rotation of persons in power.

Yavlinsky also stressed that it should be the task of the Russian society to solve this problem, and the society should count on its own in this long-term and complex work.

According to Yavlinsky, the key goals of the civil society in Russia, as well as YABLOKO as a part of the society, are equality before law, independence of justice and inviolability of property rights.

He also wished to the President Obama’s Administration to resolve the serious economic problems and find a correct way out of the extremely difficult situation in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yavlinsky also stressed that Russia was interested in positive development of the USA as one of the key Russia’s partners.
