ST. PETERSBURG (SPT) - Senior Yabloko official and St. Petersburg politician Igor Artemyev was appointed head of the new Federal Anti-Monopoly Service on Wednesday.
A leading liberal politician with a reputation for honesty, Artemyev had a long history in the city government before being elected to the State Duma in 1999 where he served as deputy head of the committee on credit organizations and financial markets.
He entered the Legislative Assembly in 1994 and headed its budget and financial work. In 1996 Artemyev was named first deputy governor in Governor Vladimir Yakovlev's administration.
The men fell out in January 1999 and Artemyev unsuccessfully challenged Yakovlev in gubernatorial elections in October that year.
