SPS Puzzled over Irina Khakamada's decision

Moscow, December 30, 2003. (RIA Novosti correspondent Larisa Sayenko) - The Union of Right-Wing Forces (SPS) was determined not to make a presidential nomination for next March's poll. Now, Irina Khakamada, Co-Chairman of the SPS, has announced she will run. "An unexpected decision," say party activists. "Quite unexpected," comments Lilia Dubovaya, chief of party PR. Khakamada has to collect two million public signatures in her nomination support. Anyway, it depends on the next party congress, on January 24, to decide whether the Union of Right-Wing Forces will back her. "It must come as a joint resolution of the Union of Right-Wing Forces and the YABLOKO parties. Any liberal split would be disastrous, in view of current developments." "Exotic," snapped Vladimir Lukin, one of the heads of the YABLOKO party, as he referred to Irina Khakamada's sensational move on Echo Moskvi radio. Most respondents rejected her in an Echo Moskvi public opinion poll.
