MOSCOW (MT) -- The St. Petersburg election committee is
investigating Channel One and Rossia television for broadcasting comments
by President Vladimir Putin praising his envoy and gubernatorial candidate
Valentina Matviyenko, Kommersant daily reported Wednesday.
By law, an official may not promote a candidate unless speaking in a
private capacity. Broadcast of such remarks must be paid for out of the
candidate's campaign funds.
Electoral officials have not blamed Putin or Matviyenko, who is running
for governor in St. Petersburg.
