St. Petersburg, June 24, 2003. A decision to form a working
group to prepare for the gubernatorial election campaign was adopted at
a meeting of the Bureau of the Regional Council of the St. Petersburg branch
of the YABLOKO party. On Tuesday the Press Service of the St. Petersburg
branch of YABLOKO informed a Rosbalt correspondent that the group would
undertake the holding of a negotiation process with potential allies and
would also collect and analyse proposals on the forthcoming election campaign.
The working group includes Chairman of the regional branch of YABLOKO Maxim
Reznik, deputy of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Igor B. Artemyev
and two possible candidates for governor from YABLOKO - deputy of the State
Duma Igor Yu. Artemyev
and coordinator of the YABLOKO faction in the city parliament Mikhail
Amosov.
In addition, it is expected that a conference to define the role of
the party in the gubernatorial election campaign will be held in July.
"We have two people who deserve a shot a running for the post of
Governor of St. Petersburg, but we cannot rule out that we may also support
a non-YABLOKO candidate," said Reznik. The party conference is preliminarily
scheduled for July 10-15, 2003.
Commenting on today's statement by Valentina Matviyenko on her intention
to run for governor, Chairman of St.Petersburg branch of YABLOKO noted
that "this was a long expected decision, and came as no surprise
to anybody." "Now the political situation in St. Petersburg
on the threshold of the gubernatorial elections has become more clear,"
said Reznik.
