The political council of the St. Petersburg branch of Yabloko
decided to support Yuri Solonin, Dean of the philosophy faculty
of St. Petersburg State University, at the by-elections [to the
State Duma] in the 209th electoral district of St. Petersburg.
Yabloko became the fifth political structure to support the member
of the Unity party Solonin at the by-elections to the State Duma.
Yesterday, the leaders of the St. Petersburg branches of Fatherland,
the Union of Right-Wing Forces (SPS), Unity and St. Petersburg’s
Volya (“Petersburg’s Liberty) published their declaration where
they called Solonin their consolidated candidate.
According to political science experts, the St. Petersburg branches
of the right-wing and centrist parties set a precedent: they supported
a single candidate. Possibly, a new political technology is being
developed in the by-elections in the 209th electoral district
of St. Petersburg, which can be used at the next elections, for
example, to the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg scheduled
for 2002.
