Press Release

June 2, 2012

A mass rally against commercialisation of education and merger of Moscow schools was held in the centre of Moscow on the International Childrens Day, June 1.

About 400 people teachers, parents, students, initiative groups of parents, schools and kindergartens, as well as museums and libraries workers participated in the rally. The organizers of the rally were Trade Union Teacher, Public Council In Protection of the Education Sphere in Moscow, an initiative group of students and staff from the Moscow State University, the Moscow Parents movement and the OkkupaiMoskva movement.

Olga Vlasova, member of YABLOKO Bureau, post-graduate of the Moscow State University and member of the Coordination Council Against Merger of Moscow Schools, made a speech at the rally on behalf of the party. She noted in her speech that fraud had already come to schools. This could be observed in the elections and decisions made by schools managing boards openly made in compliance with the decisions of the Education Department on the merger of schools. According to Vlasova, the statements of representatives of the Education Ministry on the voluntary merger of Moscow schools sounded especially cynical in such a situation. She also called the Moscow government to start an open dialogue with the society and experts in education and discuss with teachers and parents the transformations planned for each school.
