A rally against construction of a nuclear power station
in the Nizhny Novgorod Region organised by ecological organisations
and YABLOKO will take place in the centre of Moscow on March
18.
A motor race Murom – Moscow against construction of the
nuclear power station started today. On March 18 YABLOKO’s
activists together with party leader Sergei Mitrokhin will
meet the participants of the race in the Moscow region and
join the race.
“My task is to ensure that the motor column is allowed
to enter Moscow, as the participants expressed their concern
that the column would be stopped by Moscow,” Sergei Mitrokhin.
Today protesters have been stopped by the police several
times and their passport data were copied.
Today the column consisting of 30 cars will make stops
in the Monakovo town, Nizhny Novgorod and Vladimir, where
the activists will hold a rally by the city administration
building. After which the motor column will follow to Moscow.
In August 2009 the atomic ministry (Rosatom) announced
that it was going to construct a nuclear power station 26
km from Murom by the town of Monakovo, Nizhny Novgorod region.
YABLOKO was against such construction, as active karst processes
leading to formation of cavities had been developing in
the territory chosen for the construction site.
Population of Murom amounts to 120,000 people, and 70,000
people out of them signed under petition against construction
of the nuclear power station. The collection of signatures
was organised by the Vladimir YABLOKO branch. However, representatives
of the atomic ministry stated during their meeting with
the citizens of Murom, that they had been observing the
site for two years and made a conclusion that the site was
safe for construction of a nuclear power station.
Initially it was planned to construct a nuclear power station
by a small village in the Nizhny Novgorod region. However,
later Rosatom decided to construct it by Monakovo on the
border with the Vladimir region stating that construction
would be 15 bln roubles cheaper there.
