YABLOKO assesses President’s Address to the Federal Assembly as controversial

Press Release
November 12, 2009

The YABLOKO party shares President’s call to modernization on the basis of democratic values, however, YABLOKO does not see any signs of the real change of the political course towards the indicated goals. Such a statement was made by YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin.

“We welcome the President’s statement that Russia’s modernization should be carried out on the basis of democratic values and free development of individuals. At the same time, the Address does not show a link between modernization and democracy,” Mitrokhin said.

Mitrokhin also added that absence of a tough assessment of falsifications at the regional elections on October 11 demonstrated this too well.

“The problem of falsifications was mentioned as a merely technical problem and with reference to the regions only, however, in reality the problem is in systematic stealing of votes at elections of all levels. After October 11 public opinion showed its resolute mistrust to the institute of elections. Absence of a clear statement of the President on this problem is a permission to those engaged in falsifications around the country – “go on!”, Mitrokhin said.

The political reforms proposed by the President are, according to his words, “insignificant and should mainly refer to the regional level.” “We support the idea of abolishing of collection of signatures [for registration at the election race]for political parties, however, we think that this should be done right now, rather than in a far perspective,” Mitrokhin noted.

Sergei Mitrokhin also called Dmitry Medvedev’s statements that conditions had been allegedly created for equal coverage of political parties’ performance in the state mass media as contradicting the real practices.
“It is impossible to create political pre-requisites for modernization of the country in the 21st century without ensuring fair elections and creation of conditions for real political competition, as well as formation of clear guarantees of property rights, intellectual property inclusive. However, the Address does not cover these tasks”.
At present YABLOKO has been preparing Statement by the party Chairman where he will give complex assessment to the Presidential Address to the Federal Assembly.
