YABLOKO organisation in Klin refutes the allegations of the criminal past of its candidates

Press Release
September 7, 2009

On September 3, the official web-site of the Klin District Administration (Moscow region) published an article entitled Klin YABLOKO Conceals Criminal Past of Its Candidates.

YABLOKO assesses such a publication as a campaign targeted at the discrediting of the party, whose activists have been criticising Alexander Postrigan, head of the Klin district, and prepared a meeting (scheduled on September 13) where they are going to demand his resignation.

The absurdity of these allegations is confirmed by the fact that the article with such a title does not say a word about any criminal proceedings against YABLOKO’s candidates, moreover the names given in the article have nothing to do with either YABLOKO or its candidates.

“All our candidates are law abiding and honest citizens”, Elena Samsonova, chair of the Klin YABLOKO, said. “We can not understand how such an article could emerge at all, as we have forwarded documents [to the Electoral Commission] where we in the due order informed [it] on the absence of criminal proceedings or persecutions of each of the candidates”.

Samsonova also added that Alexander Postrigan, head of the administration, tried to fabricate criminal proceedings against YABLOKO’s activists, however, investigation proved them guiltless, and the authorities had to bring their official apologies.

“It would have been unspeakable if we included people who could damage the party’s reputation, moreover in a situation when our opposition candidates have been under continuous pressing and when any mistake can be used for more pressure. If someone is going to look for people with criminal past, they can be found in the so-called Postrigan’s block. Postrigan during his 17 years of heading the region survived a dozen of criminal persecutions and was even arrested in 2001 by a special police department combating against organised crime,” Samsonova said.
