A
round table talk devoted to the development of August 1991
took place in the Saratov branch of YABLOKO last Friday. “democrats
of the first wave” – members of the Memorial society, YABLOKO,
the former SPS party, the Right Course and Solidarity movement,
as well as their colleagues, opponents and students participated
in the discussion.
The participants of the discussion shared their views on
the coup d’etat attempted 18 years ago. Young people were
interested to listen “how it all was”, watched photographs
of mass-scale actions that took place in Saratov in 1988-1991.
A vivid discussion developed around the roots of GKChP (the
committee which organised the coup) and why it failed. Some
speakers called those developments a “provocation”, the other
thought that it presented a conflict between the elites and
served as the last manifestation of the activity of the civil
society in Russia.
