Reactions of outrage followed after Natalya Estemirova,
a prominent human rights activist in Chechnya, was found
murdered yesterday. Estemirova is the third human rights
activist killed in the Russian federal republic in three
years. Sergei Mitrokhin, the leader of Russian LI Full Member
party Yabloko released a statement stressing that 'the murder
of Natalya Estemirova [is] a direct consequence of governmental
policies in the Northern Caucasus and in Russia in general.
The truth is that systematic violations of human rights
- that Natalya Estemirova had been opposing for many years
- are still taking place there.
