YABLOKO’s leader meets with Russia’s Ombudsman

Press Release
May 14, 2009

A meeting between YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin and Russia’s Ombudsman Vladimir Lukin took place on May 13.

An initiative group of the citizens from Nekrasovka district, Moscow, told Lukin about their problems: despite their property title their 640 garage boxes were destroyed in the above-mentioned district. The court ruled out that compensations in favour of garage-owners should be paid, however, they were 2 – 2.5 times lower than the market value of the destroyed garages.

Sergei Mitrokhin also handed Vladimir Lukin an appeal from public organisations and citizens of Gelendzhik, Krasnodar Area, in support of local human rights activist and journalist Vladimir Ivanov who was unlawfully imprisoned on April 28 for his attempt to make a panorama photograph of the building of the Gelendzhik City Court and its Chair Vladimir Krasnopeyev entering the building. The judge knocked out the camera and together with the court’s marshal twisted Ivanov’s hands and called the police.

Ivanov has been detained for two weeks already. Moreover, he is accused of violence and insult of the authority. In addition the police “lost” the complaint submitted by Ivanov on his detention. Ivanov still continues his hunger strike in prison without any medical help. The ombudsman promised to interfere.

Sergei Mitorkhin and Vladimir Lukin agreed that their meetings should be carried out on a regular basis.
