The First Deputy Head of the Yabloko faction in the State Duma of the Russian Federation Sergei Ivanenko assesses the recent events in the USA as “a thoroughly planned terrible act of terrorism that had been planned over a long time.”

“The terrorists undertook such steps to present an apocalypse and demonstrate their abilities to the world,” stressed Ivanenko in an interview with journalists on September 11, 2001. If the civilised international community fails to find a solution to the contradictions along the North-South line, then, according to Ivanenko, the 21st century may develop under the spectre of this opposition.

Ivanenko is also certain that Russia must offer political support to the USa, which should not be reduced to the expression of condolences. Certainly, added Ivanenko, the United States “will respond to such acts of terror, and the response will be tough”. Consequently, the situation in the Near East may aggravate. In such circumstances Russia should maintain a clear-cut and effective position in its fight against international terrorism,” concluded Ivanenko.
